The stunning and relatively untouched Langdale Valley ('Langdale' from the Old Norse ‘Long Valley’) is a walkers paradise.
It is a perfect example of a glacial U-shaped valley, carved out from a massive glacier drifting towards the Irish Sea many thousands of years ago.
This solitary Beech has grown, probably over 100 years or more, into a full and balanced form unlike those situated in more crowded woodlands.
Over many years, since I was in my late 20’s (in my 50’s now!) it hardly seems to have changed at-all. This solitary tree has become an anchor-point in my life, reminding me how nature can provide us with stability, continuity, and perspective as our busy lives unfold so quickly.
